FAUX FINISHING

Faux painting or Faux finishing are terms used to describe a wide range of decorative painting techniques. From the French word meaning “fake”, faux painting began as a form of replicating materials such as marble, plasters, and wood with paint, but has come to encompass many other decorative finishes for walls and furniture.
Faux Finishing is a decorative feature that involves layering paint glazes or plasters to create various effects. From textured walls to bricks, combinations of glazes can create the depth a standard paint job can never achieve. The effects are endless. Just remember that Faux finishing is not like painting. Painters use rollers and sprayers to apply the paint, Faux Finishing is applied methodically by hand with a color wash brush, which can take longer and is much more artistically involved. Our hand brushed application cannot be duplicated with a sponge or a rag. Using a brush allows the glaze to be manipulated by the artist in a way that resembles the background of a fine art painting instead of lifeless wallpaper. People are also attracted to the simplicity of changing a faux finish, as it can be easily painted over compared with the hassle of removing wallpaper. Thus, it is more expensive than basic painting. If you have a budget for Faux Finishing, let us know so we can help you select a finish that fits your style and budget.

HOW TO CHOOSE A FAUX FINISH

Choosing the right faux is easy for some, tougher for others. If you know what feel and color scheme you want for the room, looking through our many sample boards can help you choose the right finish. The finish can be either light or dark in value, bold or subdued, depending on how much “movement” or “veining” the end result requires. Touring homes and designer showrooms are great places to see faux finishes on full sized walls. If you’re lost or feel you just don’t have a knack for decorating, we can help you choose a finish that is right for the space with colors that will be pleasing for everyone. After meeting with us we can decide the best overall look for the room based on color and texture. Whether your style is Contemporary, European or Asian, we have a finish that’s right for you.

OUR PRODUCTS

We use a variety of different glazes based on the look we are going for. All of our glazes are water based and have a light satin sheen that helps with durability. The colors are all custom mixed depending on the required finish. Color is relative and can be easily affected; so on site mixing is the only way to get the color exact.

We also offer different textured applications. We use a product called Silk Stone, which is a tint able plaster like product that is applied with a trowel and can be layered just like a faux finish but not only has a raised textured finish, but literally shimmers like natural stone because of its organic properties.
We also use Venetian Plaster. This products color can also be customized and has the same raised textured finish, but can be burnished to give it a beautiful old world finish.

PRICING

With such a range of high end Faux Finishes to choose from, we price our work by the square foot depending on your customized finish. Pricing for individual finishes is based on the number of steps involved as well as the product used. For example, Silk Stone and Venetian Plaster cost more per sq. ft. than faux with glazes. A two step, one color glaze application will be less expensive than a three color finish. Please contact us to set up an appointment where we can measure your sq. footage and decide on a finish. We will then put together a bid with pricing for a few different options.
